From Bavaria – via Australia

The Masterpiece blanket continues to grow, with another square arriving from Australia a couple of days ago. I have got such a lot out of the project, including (as I’ve mentioned before) learning new skills

Some time ago I commented on a post by Dani (who lives in Teddy and Tottie Land) about her beautiful Bavarian crochet and she promised to post a tutorial about how to do it (you can now find it here). But more than that, she offered a Bavarian crochet square for the Masterpiece. Her lovely square arrived a couple of days ago, along with a gift of a fabulous book (alcoholic afternoon tea anyone?).

And so, having a worked example in my hand, I decided to give the tutorial a go. The instructions include loads of photos and I found them very easy to follow, but it’s always much easier to understand how to make something if you can actually look at a real example made by an expert. With all this help, I had no trouble producing a Bavarian square of my own. It’s not up to Dani’s standard, but I think that I will include it in the Masterpiece as a demonstration of an unexpected yield from the project.

So, thank you Dani… I can feel a Bavarian blanket coming on!

  4. Pretty crochet, and I’m impressed you just picked up the hook and yarn and made one equally pretty.

  5. Your Bavarian square is beautiful. What a fast learner. I’m so pleased it all arrived in one piece. Gosh! I didn’t realise there was so much alcohol in the tea time treats!!! I just loved the pictures (didn’t read the recipes!!) That will make for some interesting afternoon teas! Thanks so much for highlighting my Bavarian tutorial – and for letting me be a part of your magnificent Masterpiece. Dani xoxoxoxoxoxox

    • Thank you…I’m hoping the Masterpiece will be finished by May. As for a whole Bavarian blanket… I’m trying to finish some things before I start any more (haha).

      • Lol! I am hanging out to attempt to WIN myself a Bavarian blanket from Ms TeddyTotty herself so that I don’t even have to pick up a hook but knowing my luck I am going to have to nut out that amazingly long and detailed gorgeous tutorial that I downloaded (just in case I don’t win which is a heinous thought! πŸ˜‰ ). I just discovered your wonderful blog via a pin on Pinterest. I didn’t even realise that you were careening around on the peripherals of the blogs that I follow πŸ™‚ Hi, excellent blog by the way πŸ™‚

        • Thank you… interesting that you arrived via Pinterest. I had been toying with posting photos there for ages, but only go round to it very recently with encouragement from Kate (http://talltalesfromchiconia.wordpress.com/)… so glad that I did.

          • It’s a great way to expose your stuff to other people and if you get your dear constant readers pinning, it adds mass. I have found HEAPS of amazing blogs that I wouldn’t have found ever just by surfing. Using images makes a more powerful search in my mind as you bypass not being able to know what is in the post and you can see directly what the post is about. I love Pinterest! πŸ™‚

  7. Both squares are gorgeous. I hadn’t heard of Bavarian crochet before so checked out the Teddy and Tottie tutorial and will definitely give it a go in the near future. I’m always amazed (and very thankful) to bloggers who put so much time and thought into sharing their craft – it’s a wonderfully detailed tutorial, isn’t it? Katrina x

    • Dani’s tutorial is great – I found it really easy to follow, especially because of all the photos. Now I’ve got the hang of it, but can’t remember all the steps, I’m going to create a text-only version that I can print out and carry round with me to use rather than having to have my laptop on! You are right – the effort that goes in to creating this sort of tutorial is amazing… I may have to send Dani a little thank-you πŸ™‚
