I love this time of year… seeds germinating, seedlings in need of transplanting, vegetables that were planted out earlier in the season starting to grow. It’s even been nice enough to get out and make some progress with all the jobs this afternoon:

/ May 12, 2014I would LOVE to just get out and plant veggies all over the place with only the slugs and snails to contend with (and the odd blackbird…aren’t they always “odd”?!) but alas, unless I completely enclose my veggies and most of my annuals and perennials and shrubs AND trees, they get scoffed to the ground by wallabies and possums š¦ Lovely to see your wonderful garden getting going again for another year š

/ May 12, 2014Fortunately we are short of wallabies and possums in west Wales š … did have to clip Lorna’s wings the other day though, as she was flying onto the fruit cage, walking over the top and jumping down into the veggies. Who said chickens can’t fly?

/ May 13, 2014I am well aware of how dexterous chooks can be…we had a bunch of 5 of them escaping the coop regularly and we had NO idea of how they were doing it! In the end we started sitting out watching them…for hours on end! I caught them tunneling out underneath a hole next to a tree root that involved them pushing themselves out through rocks…amazing tenacity! I will never underestimate chooks again!

/ May 12, 2014I should be making more progress with my raised beds, but it’s still pretty hot, so I’m not too worried about planting yet. Plus we need to borrow a trailer so we can take the weeds to the green waste disposal and collect some rocks on the way back so I can put them in the bottom of the beds for drainage. I’ll probably get out there again today with my spade and strip some more weeds… Your vegies all look very happy and healthy, and the spuds are getting away very quickly.

/ May 13, 2014We make lots of our own compost and that’s what we add to the soil each year. We even have the neighbours trained to deliver their grass clippings for us to compost or use a mulch (as seen in the picture of the courgettes and squashes), The garden had no soil when we moved in (the builders had completely stripped it) and it has been a long hard road to get it as productive as it is… we even had to resort to buying in several tonnes of topsoil to get things going.

/ May 13, 2014Wow, if you had none when you moved in, you have certainly created beautiful soil now. So productive. I love compost, and agree that it is a fabulous addition to soil. Mine is very clayey and it helps to break it up a little.
