A week of wool

Today is the final day of UK Wool Week, a celebration of all things woolly and a good excuse to go out and buy some local yarn. In fact, I have rather a lot of British wool in my stash, so I resisted the temptation and, instead, made a set of British wool squares, destined to become part of the covers for my sofa (it’s a rather long-term project):

Six squares in New Lanark Wool

I’d already made quite a few traditional granny squares to use, but then I was tempted by a recommendation from Phil over at The Twisted Yarn, and so bought this wonderful book which has instructions in it for the six squares photographed above:

Connect the Shapes: Crochet Motifs

What is particularly good is the instructions are both written and in the form of charts. It’s great and I can see that quite a lot of my crochet sofa is going to be based on patterns in this book.

So my UK wool week has been very productive… anyone else made anything interesting?

    • I think the book is worth buying – it covers a whole variety of shapes, plus it includes lots of ways to join them together. I don’t often buy books like this, but I’m glad I got this one because it’s given me all sorts of ideas for projects of my own.

  4. Really good patterns. One of them reminded me of the portcullis on the old threepenny bit.

  5. I was also influenced by Twisted and purchased that book – it hasn’t arrived yet, so I am glad to hear you also think it is a good buy. [Books are more expensive here.] Your sofa is going to be beautiful! You sent me some flowers in that lovely blue/grey yarn [which is much nicer in real life than photographs I think] and so I can really see where you are going 🙂 I am working on your square. I have been working on your square for weeks. I keep undoing it. I wanted to design something special but it always comes out too big, too small or just plain horrid. You may well get a square from that book if it turns up soon! But it will be made in lovely New Zealand wool 🙂 When that is finally made I shall turn my attention to my ‘dangler of international happiness’ and then I shall start work on a Bavarian blanket for my daughter and then I might finally get around to creating my crochet version of Twisted’s mandala……………… I have my evening crochet sessions planned for the next ten years 🙂

    • Since the aim is to cover a rather large piece of furniture, I thought I’d better choose something that wouldn’t be too exciting! Originally I was going to do the whole thing in a ripple pattern, but then I decided that it would be much more fun to use lots of different patterns and techniques.
