Puzzling

Sometimes it’s good to do something just because you want to. And so, this week, I put aside sofa covers, slippers and string bags and made something that I saw a while ago and simply wanted to have a go at, namely an Amish Puzzle Ball:

It’s lovely and tactile, but has no particular use. I have given it to Mr Snail to have on his desk… and possibly throw at his computer when he’s having a frustrating day!

If you want to make one of your own, the pattern is available free on Ravelry. I made mine with Paton’s mercerised DK cotton and a 3.5mm hook.

  3. I just got lost in the blog post about how to make one and then in You Tube with videos ….. What fun – not only to make but then also to play with! I am sure Siddy would love one 😀

I’ve saved the link and will add this to my seemingly endless list of things I want to makeonedaywhenihavetime.

I hope Mr Snail doesn’t have too many moments of throwing his at the computer!

  5. I made one a while ago for my cat, only smaller. It’s probably under the sofa with Olive’s other toys. And now, I want to make more.

  6. They remind me of lithops! I think you should make some to scatter at the feet of your tree of life project. Or perhaps start a garden of crochet loveliness….

  9. This looks like a fun diversion–I’ve seen them as toys for babies, good for their little hands to grab. I like your colors.

  10. I follow that blog as well. Never had the time to make an Amish puzzle yet though I am sure there might be a 2 hour block spare in the middle of next winter 😉

  12. I love the colours you used, Jan – they look lovely together, don’t they? 🙂
I must admit that I’ve had all of Dedri’s Amish patterns for a while now, and have only just actually started making the Star Ball pattern a few days ago. I’ve used a really tough lightweight cotton, as it’s going to be yet another toy for my brother’s, rather spoilt, dog!
I must admit, I’m finding it really fun to make, and Dedri’s instructions are so easy to follow 🙂
