Hello world!
Part of my current apple collection
I know that you haven’t heard from me for a while, but there was a trip away, a whole heap of orders to make, piles and piles of apples to process and a novel to edit. In fact there are still piles and piles of apples and a final read-through of the novel, but progress has been made. In addition, Mr Snail was ill for a week and so I had to do all my own washing up… good grief!
The first time we went to Norway, Mr Snail got the idea for a novel involving the snow hotel and kicksleds. Finally, over the summer, he finished writing it and it was ready for editing. One of the things that I hate about many self-published books is the poor English – confusing ‘too’, ‘to’ and ‘two’; grocers’ apostrophes; poor spelling – and, perhaps worse, plot inconsistencies and factual errors (bluebells flowering in July, for shame). So, although editing factual work rather than fiction is my profession, I have switched hats and am now in the throes of my final read-through of Kirkenes Blue. While I do this, Mr Snail has been working on the cover…

I have already suggested a slight edit to the text!
All being well, Kirkenes Blue will be available in both paper and electronic format towards the end of the month and I’ll have preserved enough apples to provide me with a year’s worth of breakfasts.

/ October 25, 2015Ouch! I never quite understood grammar, which is probably obvious to you. 🙂 I do know what you mean about factual errors. It’s rather like tripping over a root in the path, it takes something away from the walk. Thank goodness for editors! Good to hear from you again.

/ October 25, 2015Becoming an editor has rather ruined reading for me… both because when you spend all day reading for a living you don’t want to do it for pleasure and also because the mistakes are irritating. All I can say is thank goodness for audiobooks… which I can enjoy whilst knitting or crocheting 🙂

/ October 25, 2015Mr Snail says he’d rather I found any mistakes than them appear in print, so it doesn’t cause problems. I have learned to retain an author’s style, because it’s all too easy to want to change things because it’s not how I would have written it. Tact is also important as an editor!!

/ October 25, 2015You have been busy! Congratulations on your editing work and to your husband on his novel. I’m impressed with the monumental dedication it takes to see a piece of fiction through. I’ve also read time and again that the key to excellent writing is editing. You’re a great team.
I’m forever guilty of misusing ‘their’ and ‘there’ and even took a wonderful lesson from Ms. Pauline on the subject. Some of it is a mental block I think but hard to say.
Will you make applesauce? Apple pies? Perhaps an apple tart? There are so many wonderful ways to use them. Enjoy.

/ October 25, 2015So far we’ve had apple cake, apple crumble, apple and waffles and even apple in a curry! Plus I eat stewed apple for breakfast almost every day. I try to bottle (can) the cooked apples without any additions so that they are as versatile as possible when it comes to using them. I’ll probably freeze some too.

/ October 26, 2015It doesn’t look as though you’ve returned from your trip to a more restful time. I’m sorry to hear Jon’s been poorly but for heaven’s sake woman, couldn’t you have saved the washing up till he recovered? Or does this count as his holiday?
Hopefully the editing will be much easier with you at hand and the author won’t argue for the same reason.Try not to overdo things with the apples Jan.
