Aliss lays an egg

In a week in which the news is full of the horror of another mass shooting, football violence and yet more refugee deaths, not to mention wild claims about the results of Britain remaining in/leaving the EU, it’s good to focus on events at a more personal level (if only to remain sane).

And so, I’m delighted to tell you that one of our new girls, Aliss 2, has laid her first egg today, just 2 weeks after we got her. She’s still quite a small hen, but she managed a 43g egg. For comparison, Tiffany’s egg today weighed 76g.

You may be wondering about why she’s Aliss 2… well, she is so similar to our original Aliss (late of this garden), that we just knew that we’d end up calling her Aliss anyway. I had thought she might be Two-ey, but the Aliss has stuck. For comparison, this is the first Aliss:

And this is our new girl:

The first one was a good layer and it looks promising for our newbie.

Do you have good news to share this week?

  2. Good for her! My life feels more settled these days so I am applying for voluntary work at the library.

    • Good luck with that. I imagine working in a library to be very peaceful and stress-free… but perhaps that’s a bit of a fantasy. I’m sure it will be fun though.

  3. Always nice to hear good news. I don’t watch the bad news anymore because it’s mostly spun for the fear factor. My neighborhood is nice and I feel safe here. The sun is shining between the rain storms so we get a little of both. Life is good and full. Happy to hear you are getting good fresh eggs and your new Aliss is doing good work. Have a lovely week.

That’s great! We have 5 out of 10 hens now wanting to have babies so not as many as usual but about 5-6 eggs a day I can’t complain 🙂

    • We’ve been really short of eggs recently – I actually had to buy some!! Hopefully our two new girls will soon be in full production and we’ll be getting plenty once again.

  5. Good news: Up and about and walking, if slowly and sorely; we have good rain, soft and steady as opposed to the blistering down stuff that washes soil away; there were rainbows yesterday. That’s the good news round up from Mackay!

  6. Well Done Aliss2 🙂
I do miss the wonderful taste of freshley laid eggs, I must admit – and they always seemed to make cakes rise that much better, too – Enjoy! 🙂
How’s the cheese coming along? Have you finished that batch yet? Lol

  7. Nice work, Aliss 2! May it be the first of many more 😀 My good news is that I’ve cut down to 2 days in Other Work for the summer, and I have Beastie orders aplenty to keep me busy the rest of the time 😀 Oh, and the sun’s out again! Happy Wednesday everybody!

  9. Aliss, your name sounds so much like mine. Congratulations on your premiere egg. We’re in beautiful Victoria, BC this week. Yesterday I saw a humpback whale swimming in the ocean with her young calf right behind her.

    • Oh how lovely. I went to Victoria about 20 years ago and have always wanted to return – it was so beautiful. I hope you will be blogging about it.

      • It is beautiful here. We’re having a relaxing visit. I will blog about it when we return. Thanks for the encouragement. I’m glad to hear that you too have also been for a visit.

  10. My new girls Charlotte, Emily and Annabelle have all just started to lay too so it must be the week for it! 🙂

    • How lovely. However many times we get new hens I’m always inordinately pleased when they start laying. Our other newbie, Mags, is a bit younger, so I think we’ve got a few weeks to wait for her to start.
