Three Things Thursday: 1 September 2016

As usual I’m joining with Emily of Nerd in the Brain (and others) for Three Things Thursday’. As she says…

*three things that make me smile: an exercise in gratitude – feel free to steal this idea with wild abandon and fill your blog with the happy*

First, chickens – happy and behaving naturally. Specifically the fact that this:

Feathers!

is because of this:

Moulty Bluebell

Moulty Bluebell

not because of a fox or other predator. This is quite an early moult, but it’s good because the weather is still pleasant, so she’s not shivering or drenched (yet). As you can see the two new girls are also doing well; they are both laying almost every day… so I’m grateful for their eggs too.

Second, crafty activities. I spent the whole of Sunday sewing, crocheting, paper-crafting and generally being creative. I’ll write a whole post dedicated to some of the sewing sometime in the future, so here is an example of some paper-craft:

Third, tomatoes. For many years I have found it impossible to grow tomatoes. Every year in our old greenhouse I got only a tiny crop before the plants succumbed to Botrytis mould. This year is the first full growing season for the limery, and I’m delighted to report it’s turned the tide and I can now produce my own tomatoes – hurrah!

So that’s it for this week. What are you feeling grateful for?

Fresh eggs, home grown produce from the limery….. lots to be happy about! Those tomatoes look awesome! I’ve been poaching my neighbors garden (with their permission of course) as mine is still just a plan in my head for next year. My craftiness begins and ends with making sure that wires inside a computer are neatly organized and tied back 🙂

  3. Happy Birthday Mr. Snail – that card is intriguing, I bet he loved it!
I am so impressed with your Limery – it has been such a joy watching its progress from footings to fruitfulness. And happy hens are always a clucky delight.
I am mostly feeling grateful that I have been able to support my frail little Mum in hospital, giving and receiving love within the horrors of hospital, hips and Alzheimers. The weather is glorious and I have been invited to a party – life is good! ❤
P.S. you, your aardvarks and carnivorous plants have been mentioned in Nanacathy's latest post

    • Indeed they have been! Your tomatoes look delicious. I too am grateful to good food, tomatoes which became soup, oodles of runner beans that have been frozen and more wild bilberries which became bilberry meringue pie. Happy birthday Mr Snail, and don’t your chickens look happy.

      • Thank you Jan. Yes, good old healthy black humour has always helped our family through its ups and downs. Mum still comes out with things that make us laugh and although she is beyond having a joke with us, her beaming smile can still melt hearts.

  4. Well done on the tomatoes – that is a real point of honour for the limery!! The hens are obviously very happy and happy hens make healthy eggs 🙂 Love the handmade card! I’m super grateful today as it marks the beginning of a week long birthday celebration with two daughters and my oldest friend all squeezing into this tiny house…… Siddy will have a ball. Orlando will probably decamp for a quieter situation 🙂

  5. I’m grateful for cool, cloudy weather and easy sleeping at night, I’m grateful for my wonderful new egg poacher, which produces brilliant results after years of disappointments, and I’m grateful the Husband is off work for 4 days, so we can finally get to work doing up our motorbike trailer before our camping trip north in October. Love your paper craft results, and your toms are spectacular!

I’m grateful my beautiful daughter is still my best friend, grateful for my grandchildren and also for the computer which keeps me in touch with the world outside my doors.

  8. Ooooh, that card is brilliant! Happy birthday, Mr Snail! I’m also grateful for tomatoes this week… A raid on the Parental Polytunnel on Wednesday yielded 3 different varieties, which I’ve been happily munching on ever since 😀

  9. There is nothing so wonderful as your own tomatoes. I’m so happy you’ve found success this year, thanks to the limery and your diligence. The hens are lovely, and I know how soft they are too. Our neighbor has six of them and a gorgous hen house, too, made by a friend.

I can’t wait to read about the projects that you’ve been up to, including that card.

I’m grateful for cooler mornings and the approaching fall-like weather.

That’s cool! I want to built a greenhouse in my yard, for now, I only have two peach trees, but with the warm of my city they are dying 😦 I think a green house will help me to control a little bit the temperature that my plants receive. How did you manage to get the tomatoes?
