Distractions and an on-going project (still)

The wedding was weeks ago and I still haven’t finished the jacket I intended to wear for it. Note to self – be not too ambitious when selecting a pattern that needs to be completed by a specific deadline. Rather than setting it aside in a fit of pique, however, I have persisted and am rather enjoying it… here is progress so far:

At least I have two sleeves now

Soon I will be starting on the flowers that will adorn the ends of the sleeves and the open edges.

Focusing on such a time-consuming creation has meant relatively few finished objects. However, I recently realised that, to lift my mood, it would be good to make some small things, so I did: a trial pair of dragon-scale wrist warmers, a couple of hats (one for me and one for a friend) and a squash (which I now have no idea what to do with!):

It’s always good to make something when you feel glum! What do you do when the world feels depressing?

  1. Love the squash – it clearly needs some courgettes to go with it!

  2. The squash is right where it should be. With the other squash, of course! Your blog always cheers me up. Glad your back. 🙂 (No pressure.)

  3. I hide under the blankets – but that’s when I feel more depressed than the world itself feels! There have been times when I haven’t come out for days.

    • So tempting… but I’m trying to do at least some positive things!

      • Oh absolutely. My comment was out of (the) context, actually, and was a silly attempt to make light of clinical depression. Which wasn’t meant to offend anyone – I am a sufferer myself, and the symptoms ain’t no joking matter.
When I am frustrated and upset with the world, I find it helps to water the garden 🙂

    • Yes I say your beautiful tape – a great idea. I should really start making squares … I want to make a blanket to donate to charity and it would be good to have it as an on-going project.

  6. I think a whole basket of crochet vegetables is called for. Home grown and organic! The jacket is looking very good, and I’m glad you’re persisting with it.

  7. I’m sorry to hear you’ve been feeling blue. It’s nice to created on a small scale. I like projects that I can finish in a short time, along with the longer term projects.

When I’m feeling low, I like to spend time in the garden or on a nature walk. I also enjoy pottering around the house, organizing and tidying and rearranging things. The new perspective is cleansing somehow.

  8. If I’m too tired or low to knit or crochet – which is rare, but it does happen, then sorting through my photos usually lifts the spirits. I’m wondering about your squash as a home for a vaark, veggie vaark could nestle amongst the yarny vegetables perhaps. 😉

  9. That squash is brilliant! And while I’m totally in favour of creating a whole crochet veggie patch, you could also make it into a fun felt Hallowe’en decoration with a few bits of black felt 😀 I really like the dragon scale mitts, too. My antidote to a bad day is a heady mix of sofa, tea, some simple on-autopilot knitting and as many murder mysteries as I can lay my hands on. Works every time 😀

  11. When the world seems too much, I garden! It’s my own little world and it’s full of fun things. And if it is the middle of Winter I’ve got houseplants and a planted fish tank- still counts as gardening.

I’ve got a similar pattern that I’ve still not managed to make – I’ll have to write myself a stick-it note with ‘I must do better’ written on it! Lol
