High-tech – Low-tech

I like the juxtapositioning of old and new, of modern and traditional. When we visited China, I loved the sight of bamboo scaffolding being used in modern construction and in combination with high-tech building materials. And so, whenever we buy a portable piece of technology these days, I feel obliged to make a case for it using some traditional skill: Mr Snail’s tablet has a felted case, and his laptop has a crochet case, as does the satnav (the latter made of scraps). So when I bought a portable hard drive for backing-up my new computer, I just had to make it a little case:

Since it has a USB3 connection and, therefore, has a cable unlike any others Chez Snail, I worked an integral pocket (no sewing together was required)ย into the case to keep the drive and the cable together. The yarn is a chunky lambswool from the now defunct Texere, with antique mother of pearl buttons from my collection.

  1. Love the colour combo ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. I love the colours too! You and I are scarily similar! My sat nav has a quilted pouch with divider to keep the cable and screen together but separated. My iPad has a knitted coat for going out in!

  3. I guess hard drives also get cold in the winter months ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. Umbrellas! Now there’s a thought๐Ÿ˜‰

  5. Handy and elegant! And having different colour coats for each thing makes it easy to pick out the right one. We have lots of bits of small black tech which at first sight look rather similar. Perhaps I can persuade the Husband that little pouches are the way to go…

  6. Charming! I love that you mix the old with the new, and I’m smitten with these lovely colors. Your stitches are beautiful.

  7. I love this idea, and am going to borrow it to keep my own external hard-drive warmer this winter! Lol
I don’t for the life of me know why I didn’t think to do this myself – but I defo love the idea of putting an in-built pocket in it, to keep the cable tidy – great idea! ๐Ÿ™‚

Well done on the case! Great choice on the colors as well. My portable battery feels naked now.
