*three things that make me smile: an exercise in gratitude – feel free to steal this idea with wild abandon and fill your blog with the happy*
Inspired by Emily of Nerd in the Brain here are my Three Things Thursday…
Before I get started, though, I have to say that I could probably have listed thirty things this week, but here is just a tiny selection.
First, a mend by Alfred. One of the things we don’t have skills for Chez Snail is metalwork. However, we know a man who does. So, on Saturday, whilst I was crocheting, Alfred, who I was staying with, mended our Kelly Kettle. This much-mended item had finally got to a point where we could do no more – the rivets had failed so that water poured out and the anchor for the chain that allows you to tilt the kettle without getting burnt was detached completely. Cue, Alfred, who braised it for me and now it’s back in use.
In days gone-by this is the sort of thing tinkers did – travelling round the country mending pots and pans – now that’s a profession that could do with resurrecting.
Second, germination. Only tomatoes so far, but what a delight it is to see the first shoots emerging from the soil. Plus the potatoes are starting to sprout.
Third, the kindness of people. I know that I wrote a whole post on the get-together in Manchester over the weekend, but I’m still smiling about the fact that 31 people came together to craft for charity – between them, they covered all the costs and raised some money too. They laughed, they chatted and they created. And then they went home and shared the love on social media.

crafting a better world
So, those are 3 things making me smile this week – what about you?

/ February 9, 2017Ok, I admit it, I had to look up what a kelly kettle actually was as I’d never heard of them before. Now I’m totally interested and thinking of buying one…..what an awesome product. I’m also looking forward to seeing posts this year on all the things you’re growing. My garden is still just an idea right now, got 3″ of snow last night.

/ February 9, 2017We boil most of our water for tea and coffee in our Kelly Kettles (we have two now) and store surplus hot water during the day in really good Thermos flasks… quirky but we’ve done it for nearly eight years.

/ February 9, 2017Quirky is what makes life interesting I think. They don’t rivet the handle and chain holder anymore, they must have heard you kept mending yours 🙂

/ February 9, 2017Our new one (which we got last year) isn’t riveted – it will be interesting to see how long it remains attached, but at least it won’t leak if it comes adrift.

/ February 9, 2017I’m grateful that so far there have been no cyclones on the horizon this storm season, I’m grateful for bags full of frozen banana chunks from the tree I grew at old Chiconia, and I’m grateful for my birthday FitBit, which has got me up off my bottom and moving every day this week! So far, I’m breaking no records, but I am working at it!

Nice piece of work
/ February 9, 2017Smiling this week because (a) had a wonderful trip to an alpaca farm on Tuesday with two friends; (b) had a fantastic visit/meeting/lunch at Hotel Verde today, with new colleagues – lots of exciting developments on the community garden front; and (c) my frangipani and jatropha cuttings look like they’re over the hump 🙂

/ February 9, 2017No – it’s frightfully expensive!!! And, between you and me, I haven’t picked up a crochet hook for nearly 6 months 😦

/ February 10, 2017Lovely three thing this week, Dr Snail. Now I was really happy this week when I remembered where I had tidied my tracing paper and square paper away too, and I made a rather yummy fruit cake using up left over fruit from the Christmas cake.

/ February 10, 2017It’s clear that you’ve really connected with (and are a part of) a wonderful group of women. That’s delightful. And tomato sprouts! Who doesn’t like tomato sprouts? Ah, spring, you’re just around the corner.
I’m happy to be going away for a three-day, free for all crafting weekend with a girlfriend. I’m also happy to be teaching myself how to crochet. It’s an uneven mess of green yarn, but a) its a start and b) it is relaxing. Just what I need. I’m happy for your three things blog posts.
