The scrappy project from last month is completed!
The blanket began with old crochet squares and unwanted yarn given to me by Wild Daffodil, grew with the addition of scraps from my own collection and has finally been completed with scrap yarn on cones plus some odd balls of 4-ply (both given to me by Sixty Million Trebles). The result is a blanket measuring approximately 60 by 52 inches:
This blanket will soon be on its way to keep a displaced person warm – showing refugees that the world does care.

I’ve been inspired to write this (and future) ScrapHappy posts by Kate, who provides links to other (mostly sewing) ScrapHappy bloggers at Tall Tales from Chiconia on the fifteenth of every month… do check them out.

/ July 15, 2017This is some achievement – well done you. It must have been satisfying making something whole and worthwhile out of so many little bits.

/ July 15, 2017It really was. I do love using otherwise ‘unloved’ wool. No one in the knitting group seemed to want the very fine yarn on cones (it must have been left over from weaving), but once a few strands are balled up together, it makes a rather nice yarn.

/ July 15, 2017It is beautiful! I recently made a blanket which was knitted in long strips which were then joined together and inspired by your projects for people in need I am now using up yarn to make another in the same way which I will give to PATCH in Pembrokeshire. They work with homelessness including providing stuff for people who have been given a new place from social housing but have absolutely nothing to go in it. To get maximum value from my work I am using a different knitting stitch for each block to try them out! It will take ages to finish but thank you for inspiring me.

/ July 15, 2017Just beautiful! It’s not just a great use of leftovers, or a useful and thoughtful gift for someone who needs it, it’s a very good-looking item as well, which I always feel makes it more meaningful. People who have nothing need some beauty in their lives. Good work, dear Snail.

/ July 15, 2017I’m glad it’s not just me. I see some of the charity blankets that are rather tatty and people always say ‘but it will keep someone warm’… and I agree, but when I make something, I want it to be lovely too.

/ July 15, 2017I LOVE this. There is something of a persian carpet about it. I think its the colours. Beauty from the unloved and unwanted. Just bowled over. Congratulations on creating something lovely from something so unlikely. You can make a silk purse from a sows ear!

/ July 15, 2017To be honest, it has turned out better than I expected. I joined the squares as I went, so it was designed on the fly. Browns wouldn’t have been my first choice of colour, but actually I’m rather pleased with the result.

/ July 15, 2017Oh, brilliant. I rather like using scraps and creating something that I never would have gone out and bought the yarn for… I certainly wouldn’t have chosen all these browns and greens if I had a free choice of colours. However, I love the finished piece… better send it off soon, so I’m not tempted to keep it!

/ July 16, 2017This is very beautiful. To think it was put together using what was to hand–and that something so lovely came of it–makes it more amazing. I love the edges you put on to finish it that match the outer squares. Really gorgeous!

/ July 16, 2017I did wonder whether using completely different yarn for the outer squares and edging would make that part look like an after-thought, but in the end it seemed to come together quite well.

/ July 22, 2017I am absolutely stunned and amazed at what you have created. It is utterly astounding to see what has been created out of very old forgotten yarn and squares that had been abandoned years ago. You have worked a wonderful miracle and knowing that it goes out with so much thought, care and love in those stitches fills me with warmth and happiness. Thank you Jan!!!! ❤ ❤ ❤

/ July 22, 2017It’s been a pleasure to create this. When the squares first arrived I wasn’t sure what I could do with them and the (initially uninspiring) brown yarn. However, a bit of thought and we can create beauty. The addition of my scraps have helped me have a bit of a clear out some of my collection, including two partial cones of 4-ply that I was particularly uninspired about too. It will probably be starting its first leg of the journey to Syria next week… first point of call: Swansea!
