Yesterday we went to pick apples just down the road…
since then the kitchen has been a hive of activity…
There was a little time yesterday to do something that didn’t involve apples. I made harissa paste with some of the abundant chillie harvest…

/ October 7, 2017We have an apple mountain here too. Been storing the good ones in newspaper in cardboard boxes and freezing the not o good ones.

/ October 7, 2017What a lovely colour that juice is. You can easily imagine the fresh flavour, instead of the syrupy ‘cooked’ taste of that brown commercial stuff….

/ October 7, 2017I’ve just read about something *else* you can do with a glut of apples. The link is here:

/ October 8, 2017They’re not expensive, if you fancy trying it. I used to have one but gave it away because I find I prefer freezing or bottling, but I made some sensational fresh banana chips and some nice mango leather. Otherwise, I know there are some good solar versions to build yourself on the interweb, if Mr Snail fancies getting his hammer and the tinfoil out…

/ October 9, 2017I borrowed one a couple of years ago, but. like you, decided that I preferred bottling and freezing. Sadly the friend who lent it to me has now moved away, but I’ll put out an appeal and see if anyone local has one I can have for a week. I suspect that a solar version would only work here in the summer as the air is so humid at this time of year.

/ October 9, 2017You’re probably right, the solar ones are popular here, but duh, sunshine!

/ October 7, 2017You’ve been busy! Mr C’s dad has 3 apple trees on his allotment and we’ve ‘helped’ him out by using a few. It’s been a good year for fruit by all accounts, at least here.

/ October 9, 2017Despite a weekend of apple-related activity, the kitchen is still full of them! But I do have bottles of juice, jars of stewed apple and an apple crumble too. The hens have also been enjoying the lest-overs from juice-making.

/ October 11, 2017I think they must chop up the apples and leave them to go brown before they get crushed.

/ October 10, 2017YUM! Although I’ve gleaned tons of blackberries and plums around my neighborhood, I’m yet to find an unsuspecting apple tree to add to my fruity stores. And I forgot to pick up apples from the farm stand yesterday, so another week goes by without being able to try out that apple bread recipe you sent. Sigh…hopefully next week I’ll remember.
