Three Things Thursday: 12 October 2017

My weekly exercise in gratitude – three things that are making me smile – feel free to steal this idea with wild abandon and fill your blog [or Twitter account or Facebook page or diary or life in general] with happiness.

First, ethical coffee. Every two weeks I receive a (completely biodegradable) package of coffee. Our postie loves delivering it because it fills his van with a wonderful aroma, and I love drinking it and reading about the producers that it comes from. The company who sell it, Roasting House,  is able to support small-scale coffee growers because it’s a club not a shop, so they don’t have to guarantee large stocks. This is the latest; just read what they say about the project…

Second, more socialising. Last Saturday we attended a Tweet-up (meet-up for people who know each other through Twitter) of Welsh smallholders. Yes, I know we don’t exactly have a smallholding, but we have the ethos. These get-togethers are always good – great food, lovely company and the opportunity to see someone else’s set up.

Third, sitting on a parcel. This made me smile because it was so silly. I had a parcel to send to the USA yesterday. I packed it very carefully, but I wasn’t sure that it would be quite thin enough to go as a ‘large letter’ rather than a ‘small parcel’. Since the difference is about £5, it’s quite an important distinction and it was dimensions not weight that was critical. So, I drove to the Post Office whilst sitting on the parcel… and it worked! Sometimes there is a simple solution.

So, that’s what’s making me happy this week. How about you?

  2. Ahahaha I love the parcel one! I shall remember that for next time 😉 What a wonderful idea with the coffee – super tasty, good for the environment, AND good for the coffee-growers! I’d like to get into something like that, I’ll have a look if we’ve got anything in Scotland.
My three things are anticipation of a visit from a good friend, success at knitting my first ever button holes, and some surprise crochet goodies my mum ordered for me 🙂

  3. I shall have to remember the parcel trick… I’m loving my new Farmy apron; I’m loving the winding up to our holiday, gathering all the stuff we need (including a new tent, the old one is now more holey than we can mend, but we’ve bought the same brand so we’ll have spares); and last but by no means leas, finally feeling better: I think the drugs have finally subdued all the rampant bacteria 🙂

I love the coffee idea and will look them up. Jeni told me about the twitter meeting too. What has made me smile this week has been smiles. On my travels I bumped into three different people I know on separate occasions and their faces lit up each time when they saw me! As a sickly only child I was not good at making friends but now I have the knack and I love it! One of the meetings was at the local produce market which is held 4 times a year and I bought lovely meat, cheese, sourdough bread and a codiment made from foraged ingredients plus a delicious tart for my supper. In fact it has been a very good week!

The last time I had to send a parcel I struggled to get the weight down to 2kg. After much economising on cardboard, I did manage – just. I don’t think sitting on it would have helped, it was my old bike helmet!

  7. ‘Parcel sitting’ may well become the next big thing! 🙂 Though I don’t think it would work with light catchers unfortunately. Which is the big thing making me happy this week – one gigantic light catcher completed and hung safely, three more completed and ready for the shop. And the crafting chaos completely put to order – that was a few hours of sorting and tidying I can tell you. Now on with producing some cards……

  9. What a lovely week you have had! I don’t think I’ve heard of that kind of coffee distribution system here but it would be wonderful. I do almost no social media so that lets me out but a good get together is so good for a person. I have to admit to laughing out loud to the package sitting. Brilliant though. 🙂
