17 for 2017 – October Update

Debbie loved her surprise gift

October has seen several of my 17 for 2017 goals achieved, but one that I had hoped to complete has not got done and one has been entirely abandoned. Anyway, here’s progress so far:

Seventeen… Love Rocks or other little random yarny/sewn gifts. Two this month and one in the offing, so the current total is 10.

Sixteen… batches of homemade biscuits. This goal is complete.

Fifteen… cheeses.  With my training course and the five cheeses that I brought home and am maturing in various ways now, this goal is complete.

IMGP4340

so many cheeses this month

Fourteen… pairs of knickers. None this  month, so the total is still six.

Thirteen… mends. Target reached in May.

Twelve… letters to friends. Target reached in June.

Eleven… new items in my Etsy shop. Complete and more than exceeded now that I’ve got into the habit of doing this. And I’m delighted to say that sales are slowly increasing too.

Ten... plants given to good homes. Target reached in May.

Nine… has been abandoned… Forced enjoyment just wasn’t working for me!

Eight… meals using only our own produce. Target reached in September.

Seven… visits to see “social media” friends. Target reached in September

IMGP4295

finished near the beginning of the month

Six… Pairs of socks knitted, using at least three different patterns. One pair completed earlier this month, plus two pairs in progress, so the total is 4 plus two on the go… and I have used three different patterns.

Five… book chapters written. None yet, and I really don’t think I’m feeling sufficiently motivated about this at the moment. I just don’t seem to have enough dedicated time to settle down to make plans and get writing as other things keep being more urgent.

Four… blankets for charity; knitted or crocheted. Target reached in February.

Three… sessions in the loft, sorting out some of the accumulated ‘stuff’ up there. Still two. Although I have been up there and done some more sorting I can’t really describe it as a dedicated ‘session’.

Two… patterns published and on sale. I failed to get on with the second pattern in the past few weeks, although there really isn’t much more to do. The total, therefore is still 1.

One… gardening apron. Completed in April.
So that’s it for now. If you have a 17 for 2017 blog post or an update on your progress, do leave a link in the comments.

  1. You have done really well. I have made no progress on any of my goals in October at all, not even been swimming!

    • I don’t think I’m going to do quite this format next year, but it has been a great way to get into the habit of doing certain things… like baking biscuits and listing stuff in my etsy shop

Having a list of ambitions for the year can be an incentive, as can publicising them so that other people encourage you and a touch of shame spurs you on but life happens and blocks some intentions or changes them. Taht is why I used the word ‘ambitions’ rather than goals – somehow to me it feels softer. It can be carried forward to next year if I do not complete it this one. You have done a huge amount and the stuff in the loft will sit there quite happily until you have time, energy and inclination to sort through it! Did you count the day you gave me to help me start my blog in your love rocks total?- not an object but a gift of love that was greatly appreciated.

    • I hadn’t included my visit to you as one of my acts of kindness… perhaps I should.
I think you are right about ambitions rather than goals. I have actually been thinking a lot about 17 for 2017 a lot recently and whether I would do an 18 for 2018 next year. On balance, I think probably not, although there have been some real positives about this year’s list. I think that next year I will have a list of ambitions/intentions, but that I will spend much more time thinking about them than I did this time round.

    • Scrabble… but we didn’t feel like playing, so there’s no way I’m going to insist! Probably means we’ll have a tournament now there’s no pressure. It was a mistake to include it in the first place… I knew it wasn’t the right sort of thing to go on the list, but at the time I couldn’t think of anything else. On reflection, I should have had 9 handmade greetings cards…. oh well. I feel very pleased to have removed it now.

  7. I like this idea as it seems more achievable than a blanket “I am going to do XXXX every week/month/whatever”. It’s flexible enough for life to intervene. I am also a fan of abandoning things that aren’t working. There is so much that we want to do without forcing ourselves. I am getting to be like that with books. Once upon a time I felt that I had to finish every one I started. Who knows why! But now I am happy to give up on something that I am not enjoying, as there are so many books I want to read.

    • I’m with you on abandoning books… I’m currently listening to an audiobook I’m not enjoying and today I realised that I simply don’t need to get to the end, and abandoning it does not equate to failing. Like you say, it’s silly really, but obviously it’s something we have been conditioned into.

  9. That’s a great record of achievements Mrs Snail! I have completely lost track of my 17 for 2017 – last year it was hugely motivating and fun – this year ‘life happened’ sometime in the Spring and although a few things got done I forgot to record them and now …….. best to move on when things are no longer helpful or fun.
I’ll be rooting for you though and cheering you on from the sideline!

    • Being a fan of a good list I set up a spreadsheet for this at the beginning of the year… without it I’d probably have no idea of what I’d done. I’m not going to do 18 for 2018 next year, I think one year is enough.
