Byebye Bavaria

My plant to complete some of my UFOs* is going well. Finally, after four years, I have finished my Bavarian crochet lap blanket.

It doesn’t look like I originally envisaged, but I think having a border around the Bavarian centre frames it rather beautifully. I’m also rather pleased with the scalloped edging, which just finishes it off nicely.

To celebrate the completion of such a long-term project, I embarked on a tiny project that was completed in a single day. I was asked if I would make a baby bonnet by one of my Knit Night friends:

It needs a ribbon threading through, but I think it turned out quite well and it was lovely to make something so quickly.

Now… time to return to the jumper I was knitting before I got swept up in a frenzy of crochet!

  3. Yay! So beautiful and your colour choices are, of course, entirely correct! I didn’t edge mine and I rather like what you have done with yours, effectively doubling it in size. It’s no longer a mere lap blanket you could cover your sofa with it 🙂 Well done you! The baby’s bonnet is just gorgeous, such a pretty pattern. I like the way you have incorporated the Bavarian into it. Did you make up the pattern yourself?

    • The bonnet is based on a pattern, but when I followed the pattern exactly, the finished bonnet was tiny, so I adapted it. I’m rather pleased with how it turned out and it has given me a good idea of how to achieve that shape without too much fuss. The original pattern is here: https://kirstenhollowaydesigns.com/2017/02/lavender-blue-baby-bonnet-pattern.html

      • I had a look at the original – I like the ribbon finish. It makes me wish I had a little baby to make for 🙂 It’s always good to have adaptations up your sleeve isn’t it – I’m currently surprising myself by completely inventing my own crochet etui doll from memory. I saw a photo once and could never find it again…….

        • Yes, I thought the ribbon was a lovely addition and I’m leaving it for my friend to choose the colour… pink, I’m guessing, but she may surprise me!
I know what an etui box is (my mother makes them) but I’ve never heard of an etui doll…off to seek out a picture…

  8. Congratulations on the UFO completion, it’s a lovely blanket and you should be justifiably proud of it. I think those tiny baby bonnets are something you should consider for your online shop, as they’re very appealing and don’t take you long to do…

  9. What a great feeling finishing this UFO. As you know I have a Bavarian quilt made by our friend Dani, and as it goes, it’s on my lap at this very moment! Kismet. I love your larger size. It’s versatile and beautiful.

  11. It always feels good to clear a long-term UFO. That blanket looks great, and I’m sure will get loads of use. I can’t remember the last time I made baby related stuff. The bonnet is cute – and just the thing as a palate cleanser after a long project.

    • I’m quite surprised that people still want knitted or crocheted baby things, but there does seem to be demand. It’s lovely to make something so quickly… even though I had to do it twice because the pattern actually produced a bonnet that was way too small, so some modification was required!

  12. Gorgeous! I just Googled Bavarian crochet and watched a YouTube video on ‘how to’. It looks manageable but I can see how it would take a very long time to do and, also, I can see why an alternative name for it is ‘the Wool Eater’.
Would you ever embark upon another?
