ScrapHappy November 2018

Finally the blanket from the scraps left over from Sophie is finished (originally featured in ScrapHappy September). Actually, it also includes some other scraps and a few new balls just to get it up to size, along with some of the abundant Cambrian Mountains wool that I had squirreled away and which was perfect to frame the blanket.

As you can see, it’s got cute bobbles on the end edges and is currently being road bed tested by Sam and Daisy (it turns out that Daisy LOVES wool). Here they are modeling it along with the original Sophie:

The pattern suggested just joining the hexagons at the corners, and this is what I originally did, But I wasn’t happy with how loose this made the blanket, so I have crocheted each row of hexagons together, leaving only the adjacent hexagons in each row unattached. This gives it more strength and means it’s less likely to get accidentally damaged because of something getting caught through one of the many gaps.

There were about a million ends to weave in, but I have plans for all the little left-over bits… watch this space.

just a few ends

And now it’s off to Reading to make Mr Snail’s flat feel a bit more like home and provide a virtual hug from me when he’s there all on his own.

I’ve been inspired to write this (and future) ScrapHappy posts by Kate, who provides links to other (mostly sewing) ScrapHappy bloggers at Tall Tales from Chiconia on the fifteenth of every month… do check them out.

  1. I was just thinking I hadn’t seen or heard from you in ages – and then you popped into my in box so I hurried over. The blanket looks amazing and stunning and SUCH a lot of work! It’s good to see Sam and Daisy enjoying it too. Hope all goes well for you and Mr Snail! xo

  2. It looks like you made the beautiful blanket just for those sweet canines. They certainly appreciate it from the looks of it. This whole thing made me smile. I love what you’ve done with scrap yarn.

  3. What a beautiful result! I love the inclusion of the brighter blue, it changes the colour balance completely. Mr Snail is going to be exceptionally cosy 🙂 And I can’t wait to see what your plan is for all those ends….

    • The bright blue was the only one I actually bought and I dithered for a long time about whether it would work. There are a few other colours that weren’t in the original Sophie, but I had a scraps hanging around (including a couple that only made a two or three hexies) and they just blended with the original colours, so didn’t require any thinking. I’m glad I added the blue, though, it changes the whole look of the thing.

  6. Oh My, it is lovely. The blanket looks fabulous, no-one would guess it was made from scraps. The effect to my mind is of a wonderful pebbly beach. Mr Snail will love his virtual hug in Reading.

    • I do hope so. I took much, much longer than I expected to get it done (I started in July and was hoping to give it to him for his birthday at the end of August) but I love the way it turned out. I didn’t plan the order of the colours, but just made sure that I didn’t put two the same together and I’m delighted with the end result. It’s all wool, so will be lovely and warm.

  7. The colours and design are gorgeous. You might have a job getting it out from under the dogs when it’s time for it to leave for Reading.

It is beautiful Jan! I love the colours and the cream edge really sets it off. Now I know why you have been so quiet for a while!

    • I have been meaning to email you… there’s somewhere I think we should try for lunch! Oh, and the cream border was the suggestion of my friend Mrs Robinson who made me actually think a bit about the design at a point when I was just randomly adding coloured hexies.

    • I’m finding it hard to believe that this wasn’t ‘planned’, but sometimes the spontaneous approach results in a beautiful creation. I’m feeling rather pleased with myself to be honest.

  12. Well done! Most people would have taken the easy granny square method to use their scraps. I am impressed with your masterful hexis! I agree with sewing them in rows for stability. Your Sophie is also a beautiful sight❤️. Sophie’s scraps are definitely scrap happy😊👍🏻

    • I’ve done lots of granny square scrap (and not scrap) blankets over the years and I really fancied something different. In fact, this has turned out much more stylish than I expected.

  15. Wow, SO pretty! I don’t think I’d be letting my dogs lay on it! You aren’t worried about their toenails catching in the holes or the yarn?
