A chilli day

I’m always excited when the first seeds of the season germinate. As always, the first crop to be sown here is chilli, because they really benefit from a long growing season – which we can easily provide in the limery. So here they are:

it’s chilli in the limery

So far we can see seedlings of jalapeno (standard and purple) and lemon drop (just):

My heart is singing (and it’s nothing to do with the date).

Our peppers have been really slo this year. We are on our 3rd sowing! First I tried last years seed – got 5. Then I tried the year before – got 1. So I have now tried some fresh out of the pepper – lets see what happens this time! We’ve never had this problem before, and the only thing I can think of is that the seed saved in the past got too hot in storage with the sun last year. I guess we need to find a cooler place to store seed.

    • I wonder if pollination was affected by the heat last year… either the pollinators themselves or the pollen drying out too quickly.

Hmm, wouldn’t that have prevented the formation of the fruit? We did try some of our own seed, but mostly it is seed saved from bought organic peppers.

  2. So far, I haven’t gotten motivated to think about my garden. But since I tend to buy starts, I think I have a little leeway. Although this post is making me want to go dig in some soil!

This is the first year I haven’t sowed any chillies..but I’m counting on other people doing it so that I can swap some plants at my yearly Plant and seed exchange weekend 🙂

Off to a good start Mrs S. You are way ahead of me but the greenhouse is cleaned and ready. As I don’t grow chillies I have a little time in hand.
