The long haul

I first started making a cover for my sofa more than four years ago. My interest in the project has fluctuated over that time, but I have always been determined to get there  eventually. I don’t think I’ve updated you on progress for a while, so I here’s what I’ve achieved recently:

IMGP6457

seat cover

This was photographed draped over the sofa (and you can see bits of the back cushions) as it still needs the edging that will allow it to be fitted over the seat. Once it’s done, I will need to think about covering the arms and making a piece to go across the front of the base… perhaps it will be done in another three years!

What I am really delighted about is how hard-wearing the cushions that I made first have been – no pilling, no sagging and the colours have not faded. The wool comes from New Lanark and I can highly recommend it for this sort of project, as well as for warm sweaters.

  1. Blue and white is such a lovely colour combination and your sofa is going to look fantastic.

    • I’m trying to photograph it so the colours are like they are in reality, but the pictures never quite do it justice. The ‘white’ is actually a very pale grey called limestone, which stops it being too stark a contrast, but it always looks white in the pictures.

  2. I often wonder how your sofa cover is getting on. I have those flowers you sent me years ago made with the sofa yarn still hanging on the mobile that Fran instigated back in 2014. It’s looking wonderful and I am glad to hear the yarn is standing up to daily use. You can’t beat a good yarn. My corriedale Persian Tiles blanket is also looking rather splendid almost a year into its daily use. I’m so happy you introduced me to it!!

    • The trouble is, it’s all too easy to put it aside in favour of more instant gratification. Still, I rather like having a long term project on the go that I can return to when I feel like. I can’t believe it’s so long since Fran instigated the dangler of international happiness… I do miss her blog. And was it really a year since I sent you that wool? How time flies.

  3. I remember this project starting, and thinking what an epic make it was going to be, but you can’t always be grinding away at it, so it was always going to be a long term project. I haven’t seen it for a while, so I’m cheered by how much you’ve got done. Lovely wool, can’t beat it…

  4. Good to see you haven’t given up on it. I’ve always loved the blues and white of the different patterns you’ve used. One day you will just decide to see it complete. Looks like you are quite close.
