Write off

It’s a strange thing, writer’s block. I’m not sure why, but somehow I just haven’t been able to bring myself to write anything much for weeks – no letters, no work on the book and (as you may have noticed) no blog posts. It’s not that I didn’t have anything to share, it just felt incredibly reluctant to put fingers to keyboard. I’ve been quite busy – the root canal work is finally completed, I’ve finally finished a series of doctor’s appointments and I’ve spent two weekends away with two different sets of lovely ladies (hello to The Crochet Sanctuary Crowd and the Fabulous Fifties). I have stitched, hooked, knitted and sorted. Three boxes of books have gone to the Oxfam book shop, a box of craft materials has gone to be sold at an Emmaus shop that has a specialist craft section and a bag of bras has gone for recycling/reuse. I have had a great harvest of chillies and sweet peppers and a mediocre harvest of courgettes, peas and potatoes. There has been a new member of the household – Mimi the dressmakers dummy and I have learnt to do macrame. So, all-in-all, a busy time. It’s just that I wasn’t inspired to write, or even take many photographs. However, here is a little selection of what I’ve been making, doing and growing, with the hope that the next blog post will come more easily and sooner…

  1. I am glad you’re still here 🙂 Writer’s block is a funny old thing, hopefully it won’t bother you much longer!

  2. I can completely, totally, 100% relate to your recent writer’s block! I am in the midst of the same blogging doldrums . . . I know I’ll get thru it but when? You have been busy with all kinds of fun and lovely things–I’ll hope you come back soon and tell us more (and maybe inspire me to do the same!)

    • I’ve also got out of the habit of reading blogs, which is silly because I love seeing and reading what everyone has been up to. I’m hoping to establish a routine and look at WordPress at a regular time so that it becomes ‘normal’ once again to read, comment and then actually write posts myself.

  3. Spooky! You came into my mind this morning and I was thinking we hadn’t heard from you in a while and there you are. Sadly your photos haven’t downloaded for some reason so I’ll just have to imagine what you’ve been up to in the meantime.

  4. Same as with tialys the photos haven’t come through. I read somewhere that the way through writers block was to write, anything, the shopping list, one’s name…. Sometimes though it’s just an effort and I can imagine the dental work would have pulled you low. Nice to hear from you again.

    • I am so happy that my tooth is all mended and painless now… I had the work done privately and the specialist endodontist was brilliant.
You may have to be patient with the pictures – they seem to be taking ages to load.

      • I’m on my proper laptop now and they have come through. Love scraf/shawl, I’ve not done macrame for years, so lovely to see it again. We will all have spider plants again!

  7. I was on the point of emailing to ask if you felt like a Skype in the next day or so… Clearly, you’ve felt all that positive intention directed towards you from all sides 🙂 Love the macrame, love the shawl, and really love the positivity I can feel once again. We’re off on our travels again in about a week, so let’s talk before then?

  8. Sometimes we need to withdraw a little. I am in a hiatus with my creative work. Like you, I can’t quite put my finger on the reasons, but I think being out of routine is part of it. It is lovely to catch up with your doings, especially the macrame. 😘 (BTW, the photos loaded really easily for me.)

    • I made a small edit to the post and it seemed to cure the problem with the photographs – no idea why.
I am going to attempt to return to my blogging routine, but I’m trying to decide whether imposing a structure might help – a post about a certain subject on a specific date each month. I’m thinking, for example, of sharing a “monthly mend”. Haven’t quite decided what might work best yet and I don’t want to impose too many structures on myself because I do like a bit of spontaneity.

  9. Sometimes we just need a little space and down time to clear the head. From all your chores and creations, it looks like you did just that–and more.

Love the photos. Looking forward to meeting Mimi. Lovely to have sight of you and the others on this page. Your absence made me realise that one of the things I enjoy about this blog is hearing from the other readers. You’re the centre that holds us together, but perhaps there’s a way we spokes? can talk more. Monthly mend ? Bring it on – just mended my wpb v. easy v. effective – used an oddment of garden raffia from taking down the toms.

  11. You have been busy – sometimes we need to indulge ourselves in the process of making and doing. Love the macramé – I haven’t tried that since I was a child!

  12. I expect that the writing wasn’t needed whilst you had all that going on. I like the joyous scarf/shawl with the coloured tips.
