ScrapHappy August 2020

Sam the dog likes to wear pyjamas. Well, actually, what I mean is that she sleeps better when she is wearing a dog coat. We thought that this was because she was getting cold overnight – she’s an old lady at around 15 years – but even on warm night she seems to like to wear something. Maybe it’s the slight pressure calming her down, like a Thundershirt, but whatever the reason, she doesn’t wake us up at 2am if she’s dressed. She has a couple of woolly coats, which are fine for the winter, but we were concerned that over the summer these would be too warm and so I have been looking at different options. Then, Mr Snail finally wore a pair of his sweatpants so thin that they were impossible to repair and I saw a scrappy opportunity. A bit of deft scissor work and Sam has two lovely soft cotton coats…

  1. That’s a really inspired repurposing of a sweatpant leg! Lucky Miss Sam is smallish and Mr SoH’s sweatpants would fit. I fear none of the Husband’s legwear would fit round Mouse – he’s slender, but has a very, very deep chest. Plus, although he likes trailing dramatically around the house wearing his red blankie like the Hound of the Blankievilles, he doesn’t really like clothes except for his Thunder Shirt, and that only on tolerance. Oh, and his warm coat on nippy mornings (yes, we do have those, although you’d probably call it summer…).

    • It was a surprisingly good fit – just snug enough. And, because there were two legs, she’s got two of them to allow for washing.
I used to knit coats for greyhounds and was always amazed by the difference in girth around their chests and waists.

  8. Very interesting. Both of my dogs are complete fools whenever there’s a thunderstorm so they obviously need something like this.

  10. So sweet – but I understand the terrier reference 😁. I had to look up Thundershirt. I think they weren’t invented when my old dog could have benefited. He used a storm as an excuse to climb on my lap – and he was well beyond lapdog size 🙄.
