I’m pleased to report that after allowing my elbow to rest for a while, I was able to resume the knitting that had caused so much pain. When I put it to one side, it looked like this:
After a couple of weeks, I decided that, being pain-free, I would pick up my needles again. To begin with I just worked a round or two each day, but as I didn’t have any recurrence of the pain, I built up the amount I did every day and soon I’d finished my hat. It’s a very long time since I’ve done any Fair Isle knitting, so I’m quite pleased with the result. Possibly the most fun thing about this project is that you have to block it using a dinner plate, to get it nice and round!

Possibly the least fun thing was that there were about a million ends to weave in!

/ April 18, 2021It’s one of those things that I’ve been wanting to have a go at for ages… then I saw the kits from Quernstone and couldn’t resist. And as a bonus there’s enough lovely Jamieson’s of Shetland wool left over to make another one.

/ April 18, 2021My elbow is fine now – I think I must have twisted it and then the knitting made it worse because I seem to be ok now. I’m so pleased that I managed to get the hat finished.

/ April 19, 2021That is a very fine hat! I had forgotten that your elbow had become sore but glad it is now fully recovered. I enjoy doing multi coloured knitting and crochet but the ends are a pain!

/ April 19, 2021Patience is key with those sorts of injuries so I’m glad you managed to hold out until your body was ready.
The hat is brilliant – I’m not proficient in Fair Isle knitting so I’m in awe. You’ve made me want to try it just so I can perform the dinner plate trick.

/ April 19, 2021The nice thing about proper Fair Isle is that you only ever work two colours on a single row, so you’re not carrying loads of strands across the back. Now I’ve done one thing, I’m quite tempted to make something else… some mittens perhaps as I have left-over yarn and the Jamieson’s wool is lovely to work with.

/ June 4, 2021The tam is lovely! I like the colours, too. I do Fair Isle style knitting, too. If you think you will be doing more of this, I can highly recommend the book “200 Fair Isle Motifs – A knitter’s directory” by Mary Jane Mucklestone. I used those motifs when I was working on my ‘barn cardi’ some time ago and am currently using some on a couple of pairs of socks.
I haven’t been around much for some time; just catching up with people now, really.
I’m glad to hear your elbow is ok; not fun to have problems with any joint, really.
Take care! ~ Linne

/ April 20, 2021That’s a smashing tam! So much nicer than the garish tartan jobs with a pompom on top, and lovely soft heathery colours. I think mittens would be an excellent idea if you have enough of the yarn left.

/ April 20, 2021I really liked the natural hues… plus they are suffragette colours too. I will have to find a basic mitten pattern to use the design on.
