Three Things Thursday: 30 November 2017

My weekly exercise in gratitude – three things that are making me smile – feel free to steal this idea with wild abandon and fill your blog [or Twitter account or Facebook page or diary or life in general] with happiness.

First, a new book:IMGP4690

Second, warm water. The boiler broke down at the swimming pool last week. This resulted in one rather chilly swim and then the pool was closed. I’m pleased to say that it’s mended now and the temperature is back to normal. It makes me realise how brave Sarah Foto is with her sea swimming from her home on Hönö Island… check out this post to see what I mean (oh and her photos are sure to make you smile).

Third, mending. I have finally overcome my aversion to darning, and spent a happy hour or so yesterday mending socks. I did curse the poor quality variegated wool (sold as sock wool, but really not suitable) in the blue socks, but was very happy that the plain turquoise yarn from WYS has done so well in the heels and for mending. The mauve is also from WYS and I thought it would be fun to use it to mend both the coloured area and the black of the ‘northern lights’ socks… I am increasingly happy with the idea of visible mending.IMGP4694So, that’s some of what’s making me happy this week. How about you?

Three Things Thursday: 26 October 2017

My weekly exercise in gratitude – three things that are making me smile – feel free to steal this idea with wild abandon and fill your blog [or Twitter account or Facebook page or diary or life in general] with happiness.

First, drizzle. Now, this in not something that usually makes me smile, but after reading Jill’s post over at Nice Piece of Work this morning, I’m feeling very grateful that water is not something we lack here in Wales.

drizzle, adding some sparkles

Second, mould. Again, not usually something that makes me smile, but the appearance of the first white mould on the brie that we made last week is certainly a cause for celebration.

IMGP4388

small, but perfectly formed

Third, my name in a book. I only remembered the other day that helping to fund the craftivism book meant that I would appear in the list of supporters in the book itself. It’s not the first time I’ve seen my name in print. I have, on occasion appeared in book acknowledgements and a couple of times as an author, but not usually as The Snail of Happiness!

IMGP4394

I’m in under ‘S’ for Snail

I also smiled to note that Slartibartfast had contributed too.

So, that’s what’s making me happy this week. How about you?

GOOD LUCK!

A couple of good yarns

Do you enjoy a good yarn? Then this is the blog post for you…

To celebrate a month of writing and knitting, Mr Snail and I are having a little give-away. For your delight and delectation we have a package of two sorts of yarn to send anywhere in the world…

First there’s Mr Snail’s book Kirkenes Blue: a gripping yarn of intrigue and deceit under the beauty of the Northern Lights. And then there’s a ball of fabulous self-patterning 4 ply yarn. There’s 100g in the ball which is plenty to make a pair of socks or some lacy item and it’s 75% Merino wool so is lovely and soft, but with 25% synthetic fibre to make it hard wearing.

IMGP6825

Both these yarns could be yours!

If you want a chance to win this pair of yarns, simply leave a comment below; and if you want to double your chances, head over to Mr Snail’s blog and leave a comment on his post about this give-away too.

We will send the package anywhere in the world and all comments left before the end of Sunday 6 December (UK time) will be included in the draw.

Good luck!

What you eat…

The saying goes that ‘you are what you eat’ and if a recent report in The Guardian newspaper is  true, lots of people in the UK are fakes! What with vegetable fat being passed off as cheese, prawns being mostly water and cupcakes decorated with plastic glitter, it seems that what we put in our mouths is not all that it seems.

I have been cautious about processed foods for a while now – I like to know what ingredients constitute my food and so my inclination these days is to make things from scratch. We make our own bread, pizza bases, cakes, soups, pasta sauces and even (sometimes) pasta. We process lots of our own fresh foods into readily useable forms – frozen passata, bottled peaches and apples, jams, jellies, dried chillies and so on – and so I feel quite confident that I know what we are eating. However, we do buy some things that are ready-made: tomato ketchup, baked beans, chocolate… so there are  ingredients that I don’t have control over.

Settling down with a good book

Settling down with a good book

Having an interest in the food that we eat I was attracted to a book that Candy Blackman mentioned on her Cakes blog a few weeks ago: Harold McGee: Food & Cooking. An Encyclopaedia of Kitchen Science History and Culture. I don’t really need any more recipe books, but a source of reliable information about food and cooking seemed like a great idea. Despite being a massive tome, this book makes for surprisingly engaging reading, containing information on the history of everything from chocolate to saucepans, along with nutritional information, food chemistry and cooking tips. I am really enjoying dipping into it a little each day. Of course it doesn’t tell me about the plastic glitter that I might find on bought cupcakes, but for that I probably need a book on petrochemicals, not food!

A Blatant Plug

Are you looking for some summer reading (or winter reading for my antipodean friends)? Well, now is your chance to get a copy of Mr Snail-of-happiness’ first novel on Kindle for free from Amazon. The offer only lasts for a few days, so be quick!

NaNoWriMo widow

In case you don’t know. November is National Novel Writing Month, known to its friends as NaNoWriMo. Which, according to their website is:

…a fun, seat-of-your-pants approach to novel writing. Participants begin writing on November 1. The goal is to write a 50,000-word (approximately 175-page) novel by 11:59:59 PM on November 30

I know this not because I am writing a novel, nor even ever plan to write a novel, but because of Mr Snail-of-happiness.

NaNoWriMo 2011When I first met him, he was part way through writing at least one novel and this continued for many years, with nothing getting finished and drafts being abandoned. Then last November he decided to participate in NaNoWriMo… and wrote 50,000 words in a month. Well. in less than a month because he had some work to do for the first week before he could get started. It turned out to be part one of a story that, with some editing and extra work was ready to be published as BATDIG. It’s started receiving some good reviews, so that’s encouraging. Now the second part is underway, along with the beginning of another story, and so we return to him spending his free time in November in front of a computer screen tapping away, or not as the case may be. He’s even blogging about it (not sure that isn’t a waste of words!?) and tracking the amount that he writes each day.

However, the purpose of this post is not to give support to all of you others out there writing madly, but to give a big shout out to all the NaNoWriMo widows… those of you who have some lonely evenings ahead for the next few weeks, who will have to walk the dogs alone, do the shopping alone and watch whatever you like on the TV alone… hang on, that’s a bit of a plus isn’t it? Conversations will revolve around word counts, plots, characters, writer’s block and writer’s block (yes, I know I’ve mentioned it twice, but it does seem to be particularly important), and meals will be hurried affairs before the writer in the family disappears again to engage with whatever literary odyssey they are embarking upon.

Don’t get me wrong… I think it’s a great idea, I just think that the Office of Letters and Light, who run the thing, shouldn’t just provide pep talks for authors, but should have a support group for NaNoWriMo widows and orphans… I know I’d be joining!

Free BATDIG for all!

Mr Snail-of-happiness’ book is currently available free for Kindle… this is the last day so please support him by downloading it and writing a review if you like it!

Available NOW!

Just a very quick post to say BATDIG part 1 is now free for five days (until midnight on the 26th June 2012, in fact) on Amazon – I have checked the .co.uk site and there it is, in all its free glory but .com doesn’t seem to have caught up just yet. Apparently it can take hours for the various sites to show the promotion after the start date. And I thought technology was fast…

There’ll be another ‘proper’ post in a day or so – work and rain* are taking up my time at the moment. I also have the Stephen King book “On Writing – A Memoir of the Craft” that I want to read now as it is apparently an excellent guide to writing amongst other things.

OK, advert over.

Celebration!

An aside from my usual subjects… but we are celebrating chez Snail because Mr Snail-of-happiness’ first book has been published on Kindle.

In fact it is part of our sustainability strategy… poly-employment… a way to make our income stream more robust.

But really I just wanted to share the happiness!
