Blooming food

Some time ago a friend accused me of not liking flowers because I mainly grow food plants. I was a bit surprised that he should think this, especially looking round my garden at the moment at the amazing range of blooms that are in evidence. If you are ever concerned that planting fruit, herbs and vegetables will mean you can’t have a beautiful garden, think again…

And those are only a selection taken in about 10 minutes… there are also (or have been or will be) passion flowers, nasturtiums, pot marigolds, climbing French beans, potatoes, raspberries, comfrey, red currants, blueberries, squashes, mint, chokeberries and more. I don’t really select for the flowers, but if you do, you can ensure an amazing variety of colours and forms and still enjoy a delicious harvest.

  1. Sorry, but that is a slightly daft thing to say, given that you have limited space and hope to feed yourself well from the space you do have… And as you so rightly point out, there are beautiful flowers to be seen from everything that fruits, even if you don’t get big showy blossoms.

I remember a conversation with a work colleague (motor trade) a few years back. He had moved into this house and we had reason to visit for something. I commented on his handsome apple trees. He, of course, had no idea what they were. Anyhow, come the following spring, he came into work one morning and greeted me with ” ‘ay up Ann, you know those trees in my garden, well I don’t think they are apples after all. They have got flowers on……”

  4. You can always work flowers in and companion plant. And there’s nothing showier than an okra blossom. Some of the fruiting blooms are indeed beautiful.

  5. That’s the kind of comment that says way more about the person who made it than the person it was said to. Ignorance isn’t bliss, it’s just plain ignorance 🙂

  6. My favourite are the courgette flowers because you can eat them too!! They are the best dipped in dough and fried! All those other flowers are lovely too, you have such a big variety

  8. So lovely…not to mention how much bees and other pollinators thrive on all these flowers! I don’t use much oregano, but I grow several plants of it just for my bees to enjoy.
