ScrapHappy June 2018

I haven’t done a ScrapHappy post for a while, but that doesn’t mean I haven’t been using my scraps. Here is my latest “Permaculture Hat” (follow the link for an explanation):

I used up the whole of my scrap ball, but I’ve already started another one (you can see it in front of Hattie in the first picture). This and others of its ilk are made entirely from those tiny scraps of yarn that would otherwise be too small to be considered for a knitting or crochet project. Usually I sell these hats, but I have decided that this, and a variety of other hats I have made recently will be donated to Knit for Peace, who are always able to find such items good homes.

We have been very ScrapHappy Chez Snail this month, so Mr Snail is also writing a ScrapHappy post (check out his blog here after mid-morning on the 15th UK time)… be prepared for something completely different to the usual tales of fabric and yarn!

I’ve been inspired to write this (and future) ScrapHappy posts by Kate, who provides links to other (mostly sewing) ScrapHappy bloggers at Tall Tales from Chiconia on the fifteenth of every month… do check them out.

    • I like that each one is unique and simply cannot be recreated. One of the previous ones is now in Patagonia – bought to give as a gift because the colours reminded the buyer of the colours of the Wales coast path.

    • The very smallest bits get used for stuffing sometimes, but I’ve been discussing some other possibilities with Kate and we’ve had a few ideas… whether I’ll find time to try them before next mont I’m not sure, but I’ve certainly got some things to mull over.

  6. I do feel Mr Snail needs a hat like that to keep his head warm and get the creative scrappy juices flowing. It’s a true challenge to be the first Scrappist of the male persuasion and to create something from materials not normally under consideration for ScrapHappy. Who knows what new branch of ScrapHappiness he may be pioneering!

  7. This hat is such fun — and it reminds me that I’ve been thinking about using my tiniest weaving scraps in a particular way. Not a hat but . . . hmm, maybe it’s time to take the idea farther. Thanks for the push!

    • It took me a while to get over the idea that these hats would look ‘untidy’, but now I have embraced the randomness and consider the loose ends to be a feature, I’m quite happy with them.
