It’s a year since I made my first face masks (featured in the April 2020 ScrapHappy post), and over the months we’ve learned lots about wearing them and how they could be improved. So, we have progressed from shaped ones, to pleated ones with nose wires and finally to a combined version – pleated with a curved top and wire to assist with wearing them with glasses. They are a great ScrapHappy make since they don’t require a lot of fabric. Our latest ones co-ordinate with various garments I’ve made over recent months and the inner is some lovely soft cotton from a pillowcase that had started to disintegrate, but which still had lots of salvageable material. As always, I use iron-on interfacing to provide a third layer giving extra filtering capacity. This latest lot were supervised by Daisy and Mr Snail agree to model his co-ordinated ensemble as long as he could shamelessly show off one of the books he’s written and which just happens to match the outfit!.

/ April 15, 2021We find the pleated ones are easier because you can adjust them under glasses and around your chin. My friend Judith also puts a little dart for extra shaping around the nose, but I haven’t tried this.

/ April 15, 2021I hardly go out so the ones I made at the beginning are still going strong! However I have pleated type with one elastic that goes round the neck and another round the head as the ones with loops round the ears tangle with my hearing aids – then when I pull the mask off the hearing aids go flying unless I am very careful. Today I had my hair cut – Hooray! – and had to wear a mask provided by the salon as the elastics on my own were in the way!

/ April 19, 2021The end is in sight, but like you, I don’t see myself giving up my masks any time soon. Mike and I get our second vaccine on May 4th and my oldest son gets his second shot on the 7th. That covers my immediately family, my sister, and many, many friends. How about you?

/ April 19, 2021We have had our first vaccines and await our call back. The system seems to be being handled very efficiently here, so much so that when I went with Jon for his appointment (in case he felt ill afterwards) I was offered mine there and then rather than waiting for my own appointment the following week. Over half of the population in my county have now received at least the first dose. Most other members of my close family are also vaccinated now, so it really feels like there is light at the end of the tunnel.

I made 2 as per your original design. Mine is perfect and still going strong – I only wear it once or twice a week, so I see no need to replace it yet.
I made the larger one for Steve, but he couldn’t get on with it. I think it needed more depth to cover nose & chin. He found one that works for him, but I have to say, it’s not very thick. Still, for the amount of occasions he is around folk is so small, it will do.
